The topic of the article is somewhat ironic considering that now I am actually a tour guide. I wrote this article after I visited China last year and before I became a guide myself.
Mary, that was a really engaging article. I take hundreds of tours for a living and you offered points that I never thought about before. I thought the peace was well organized and helpful. The only thing I'd change would be to use subheads over each tip so its easier to scan.
I agree with Fly Girl! I like your writing because you make your point right away. Subheadings would just further illuminate those points.
While I don't take tours for a living, I do actually enjoy them for a lot of reasons, if they are small and intimate. I have had pretty decent luck with tours and some wonderful, knowledgable tour guides, with the exception of a couple. I'll bet you rock at that!
Becca, Thanks! Like you, I prefer the small intimate tours myself, especially if there's a chance to make friends with the guide or other people in the group.
Great article. I totally identify with the bored guides and the padded itineraries-both of these happened on our spice "tour" on Zanzibar. Ugggh. Never again. I've saod tjat before though, after the debaucle in Mexico though. Siiiiiiigh. I mean it this time! But seriously, good article, well-written, and relevant!
