I may have mentioned a while back that I started a part-time job as a tour guide.
This past weekend, I went on a whale watching tour. From January to March in Okinawa, you can view humpback whales spray water, flip their tails, and roll around...
So, how did it go?
You know that first scene of the movie Saving Private Ryan? It's the scene where the soldiers are about to land on the shores of Normandy on D-Day and they are all sitting in the boats approaching their demise looking miserable and throwing up all over the place?
Yeah, that was sort of what the tour was like... huge swells, the boat rocking back and forth like a seesaw, people moaning, and children screaming, "I want to go home!"
But we did see whales and when I wasn't about to gag, they were certainly exciting to watch.
My favorite quotation of the day from a young kid- "If a whale were to attack me today, I would have to spend the rest of my life killing them."
Wow, did he really think the whales were going to leap up near the boat and snatch people off?
Aren't other people just so fascinating? Have you heard anything funny lately?

Hey Mary - just wanted to let you know that you inspired me to create my own blog:

Check it out and let me know what you think.
P.S. Do you ever watch South Park (Don't know if you can get it in Okinawa)? There was an episode recently about the Japanese hunting whales. The kid's comment about whale attacks reminded me of that episode...
Mika,
You know I always did love your brownies and chocolate cake!
South Park, huh? Maybe that's where he got it...
tour guide!? sweet!!! hmm..trying to think if ive heard a random person say anything funny lately...i dont get out much these days so im going to have to say no =(
I tend to hear a lot of "funny" things here in Italy, but do you mean funny - ha, ha or funny - weird and stupid?
xo
Reese,
I was thinking more in line with ridiculous funny, but ha ha funny is good too
A little Captain Ahab in the making.
I love whales....
I think being a tour guide would be great fun. That kid's comment makes perfect sense to me from a child's point of view. I'm afraid nobody's been making too many funny comments here in Chicago since snow and earthquakes have sort of numbed people.
That seems like a really interesting gig! Was the kid American? That just seems like such an American mentality to me ;)
I love whale watches! That kid was so serious.
last night a random guy at a less than elegant bar complimented me on how proper and classy i seemed. then in the next breath, he promptly asked if i had ever been a stripper. !!!!! well then!
since it was not worth my time to be offended, i chose to find it funny instead ;)
